Additional Information
Explore the rich beauty of cloisonné enameling over copper or fine silver, working with transparent color on small jewelry scale pieces. We will focus on blending colors to achieve value gradations, luminosity, and depth to create beautiful gem-like surfaces. Foils can be used beneath colors to create special effects and we will discuss matte finishing techniques and setting options unique to enameling. Students will be challenged to work at their own level of experience and should expect to complete one or two small cloisonné pieces during the three-day workshop
Students will Learn:
Wet inlay (painting) with vitreous enamel to create value gradations in cloisonné jewelry pieces
Project completion:
Project will be completed in class
Minimum Age Requirement:
At least 18 years old.
Supplies to Bring:
1-2 magazines to make your own disposable work surface for catching enamel dust, tweezers - clean and sharp, not previously used for soldering, Sharpie marker, a good dust mask (recommend 3M - 8233 rated N100) and plastic bag for storing it, tracing paper/sketch book, colored pencils if you like using them for designing (they are not for enameling), small scissors to cut foil, 6 inch half round file, small needle nose, chain nose or flat pliers, hand towel/apron, cheap eye dropper, water color tray or about 12 plastic spoons, small plastic or glass containers, any abrasive diamond sponges, files, or grinding materials you may have for cloisonné techniques - we will have shared ones available for you to use and one will be provided in kit.
Materials in Kit:
000 paintbrush, silver foil, 5 feet cloisonné wire, 2 small copper circles, 2 small fine silver circles, medium sifter, one set of Japanese lead bearing enamel colors with 24 colors samples.
